Tseng frowned and pulled a face as he started to wake up, not sure how long he’d been asleep. There was a deep headache in the back of his head and at his neck from lying in one spot sleeping too much. The sooner I get up and out of here, the better… he thought to himself. He opened his eyes and blinked at the light, taking note of the fact that it was still daytime from it. Well, either that or he’d slept through a whole day, which he doubted.
When he tried to move his arm was when he registered the slight pull there, and he turned his head to find someone else’s hand - Aerith’s hand, holding his. She was curled up in the chair with her head forward resting on her other hand. The flowers were new, too. He felt a rush of dulled emotion at that. It had been so long since he’d seen her. He hadn’t even given her that lunch she promised. She should be preparing for her big day, but instead she was sitting here wasting her time sleeping beside him.
He thought for a moment that he wouldn’t wake her, but decided that was a bad idea. She’d probably give me a scolding for it, he thought with a hint of humour that couldn’t seem to reach his face for a smile. He moved his hand a little, hoping to wake her gently rather than suddenly.
“Aerith?” He said quietly, his voice hoarse from injury and lack of use.
“Mmm?” Aerith mumbled softly. She slowly opened her eyes and let them roam around the hospital room. She felt his hand in hers and smiled, sitting up a little bit. She turned her head towards him.
“Hi.” She giggled, squeezing his hand a bit. Tseng looked a little uncomfortable. She could sense his discomfort from the injuries. “I hope you’re feeling a little better!” She bit her tongue before she could ramble on more. The last thing Aerith wanted was to annoy him when he was in a hospital.
She had prepared to scold him the second he awoke for not calling her, but discarded the idea quickly. She would have to save it for a later day, she thought. A day when he was in a much better state. She let her eyes drop to her leg self-consciously, and pulled the hem of her dress down, trying to cover the scars the surgery had unfortunately left her with. “I’ve missed you, you know!”
